Manufacturer Spotlight: Robbe & Berking

Sep 25th 2021

Robbe & BerkingWhen Nicolaus Christoph Robbe began silversmithing in Flensburg, Germany, in the late 1800s, he had no way of knowing that his future family would continue his work for generations. Robbe & Berking continues to hold in esteem the motto established by founder Robbe: "Others may make it cheaper, but none may be better." What began as a business producing mainly commissioned cutlery and table accessories now creates silver, silverplated, and stainless-steel cutlery and other fine pieces for individual consumers and businesses around the world. From four-star restaurants and hotels to private clubs and homes, pieces crafted by Robbe & Berking abound. The dedication to craftsmanship and creativity of each generation of Nicolaus Christoph Robbe's family has made this possible.

Just before the turn of the century, Robbe took on an assistant, Robert Berking, who was certified as a master craftsman. The partnership was a success, and before long, Berking created a second partnership in marriage to Robbe's daughter Henriette. The two began building their own family as the business of Robbe & Berking expanded. They developed in Flensburg. With a new building and additions to the workshop, a dozen assistants were hired. Berking's young family grew in number, and he now split equally the holdings of the company Robbe & Berking. Just when everything seemed to be headed in the right direction, fate took the life of Robert Berking in an unexpected accident.

With so many uncertainties, the family remained steadfast to the business and continued to deliver strikingly beautiful silver cutlery products. Henriette was at the helm of the operation, and her father and brother, Arnold, her assistants. It was not until 1925, however, that the company saw a change in leadership. The following 40 years would be under the management of Henriette and Robert's son Theodor Berking who is still revered by those working for the company today. Business increased at first and new employmees included designers, engravers, tool makers, and polishers— nearly 10 times the number of those employed in the beginning. Accolades for Robbe & Berking's silversmithing spread throughout northern Germany, but WWII changed supply and demand... and life for all, as well. Instead of cutlery, the company began crafting crosses for the military. Just before Theodor ceded his position to his own son Robert in 1958, demand returned and profits grew. More space was created to fit the additional employees. While the company had been primarily focusing on traditional cutlery, the range of products expanded to include silver gifts.

By the 1960s, the striking pieces created at Robbe & Berking were recognized throughout the world; however, operations remained at home in Flensburg as they still do today under the management of Oliver Berking who spent years working alongside his father before taking over in 1997. Each manager has placed great value on the highly-skilled labor of the craftsmen employed. While other may companies cut corners and outsource work to save money, those at Robbe & Berking know that is not the way to be leaders in the market.

Robbe & Berking continues to produce breathtaking silver, silverplated, and stainless cutlery, plates, trays, barware, vases, and other radiant items. Its customers admire each handcrafted piece for its aesthetics and quality. Rigorous inspections during and after production ensure only the best will bear the hallmark of Robbe & Berking.
