Revered world-over as the finest natural material in existence, vicuña products have been sought after status symbols for generations. First introduced to the European market by Johnstons of Elgin at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, their pure vicuña stole was unlike anything on the market at the time. Weightless, warm, and unimaginably soft the popularity of vicuña among the London elite quickly grew. Native to the mountain plateaus of the Andes in South America, vicuñas exist only in the wild and cannot be bred in captivity. The high-altitude environment exposes them to bone-chilling cold, yet their outer coat is extremely thin. Each vicuña produces less than one pound of wool fiber every two years and it takes all them members of several Peruvian mountain villages to catch, collect, and release them. This piece joins the long legacy of excellence in vicuña and cashmere, producing an exquisite garment.
