In the late 12th century, King Henry II employed a group of Eastern European skilled silversmiths known for their consistent, high-quality silver and tasked them to set a new standard for coins made at their mint. Their metal became known as “easterling silver,” as its makers had come to England from the East. Over time, this name was shortened to “sterling silver.” The standard set was 92.5% pure silver, alloyed with 7.5% other metals.

Their specification for sterling silver (92.5% pure silver or 925 parts per thousand) remains in effect today. The remainder of the alloy is typically durable copper, added for its hardness, as silver is a soft metal prone to dings and dents. Sterling silver jewelry sold in the United States should be stamped “.925” or “sterling” to indicate the precious metal content and is overseen by the Federal Trade Commission.

About Vermeil

Pronounced "Ver-MAY," this French word is often misused to describe goods electroplated with gold. The Federal Trade Commission defines vermeil as a sterling silver substrate (of at least 92.5% pure silver and some copper) plated with 10K gold to a seven-millionths of an inch thickness.
