What Is Shetland Wool?

About the Materials: Shetland Wool

At The Lanam Shop, we’re proud to offer Shetland Wool sweaters made with care, heritage, and high-quality fibers. Our customers often ask: What is Shetland Wool? Where does it come from? What makes it different? Let’s take a closer look.

What Is Shetland Wool?

Shetland Wool comes from Shetland sheep, originally raised on the Shetland Islands of Scotland. These sheep developed a warm, soft inner fleece to survive the rugged coastal climate. Over time, Shetland Wool became known for its lightweight warmth, fuzzy finish, and naturally high lanolin content.

While true Shetland sheep still live on the islands, many are now raised in New Zealand and Australia, where the climate helps produce even finer, softer fibers. We source our wool from pedigree Shetland flocks and have it spun in Scotland to our exacting standards.

Why Choose Shetland Wool?

  • Lightweight warmth with minimal bulk
  • Soft hand-feel thanks to high lanolin levels
  • Naturally durable and breathable
  • A timeless, traditional material with a modern finish

We use what’s often called super-soft Shetland lambswool, which meets lambswool quality standards for fineness and softness.
