What Is Pima Cotton?

Pima Cotton is a rare and luxurious variety of extra-long staple cotton (ELS), prized for its silky texture, durability, and moisture-wicking abilities. Grown in only a few regions worldwide, Pima Cotton makes up less than 10% of all cotton produced globally. The finest quality Pima comes from Peru, where high-altitude coastal microclimates yield longer, stronger, and softer fibers.

How Pima Cotton Differs From Other Cottons

Unlike regular cotton, which has shorter staple fibers, Peruvian Pima Cotton grows fibers over 1 ⅜ inches long. This extra length allows the yarn to be spun tighter, making it more resistant to pilling and wear while remaining breathable and lightweight. It is often compared to Egyptian cotton, though the two are grown in different regions and subject to different conditions.

The Refining Process

Peruvian Pima Cotton is traditionally hand-picked to preserve fiber integrity. It undergoes a delicate carding and spinning process, followed by dyeing — either before or after spinning. This careful handling results in long-lasting, richly colored fabric that resists fading and retains its soft touch.
