The Lanam Thread: About Us
A thread that runs so true… it is our passion to bring you only the finest offerings. The thrill of the hunt has brought us to remote regions of the United Kingdom and to some of the tallest mountain plateaus in Peru. Wherever we go we seek to find materials, people, and skills that, when combined, result in truly extraordinary products. Since our inception, we have always sought to offer our customers high-quality goods that afford them enduring value. Craftsmanship, superior materials, comfortable fit, and unmatched longevity are the sacrosanct guiding principles we adhere to. All our offerings are carefully reviewed and their merits weighted against these values. Never deviating, nor succumbing to pressures of the fast-fashion-market, we have grown in spite of foreboding retail trends. We attribute this success to the discerning palette of our customers. Acutely aware of what is and what is not true quality, our customer base continues to patronize The Lanam Shop because we are unrelenting in our quest to bring you premium quality items.
A small, family-run knitwear business…
From our humble origins as a small, family-owned and operated knitwear business, The Lanam Shop has grown, over time, into much more than just fine knitwear. With a full line of men’s and women’s sweaters, outwear, and tailored clothing, coupled with our extensive home department, we have become much more than ‘just sweaters’. Perhaps better remembered by our long-time customers as ‘The Sweater Shop’, the diversification of our collection past the tried-and-true traditional Men’s Cashmere V-Neck Sweaters and Women’s Cashmere Sweater Sets led us to re-evaluate who we are. The addition of valuable partnerships with Launer London, Johnstons of Elgin, and Derek Rose further encouraged self-reflection. As a family, we made the difficult decision some time back to change our brand name.
The Lanam Shop
While “Lanam” serves as a clever homage to our origins, more than anything our name is a constant reminder of our founding values. The root “lana '' is Latin for wool and “lanam” is rough Latin, meaning “knitted woolens.” Symbolizing our beginning as a quality sweater business, Lanam became our new identity and was quickly adopted by our customers and vendors. Though our name changed, our commitment to good taste and quality is unwavering. The same values that guided our family to create the original business still remain at the heart of everything we do today. As a new generation prepares to take charge of the business, we remain optimistic and excited for the collections yet to be created, the exceptional workshops still undiscovered, and the new generation of life-long customers we have not had the pleasure of meeting.
Despite formally changing our name some time ago, we kept “The Sweater Shop” label in all our classic knitwear, for purely sentimental reasons. In the summer of 2020, we dispatched our final Sweater Shop sweater and have moved all our products to the new (though surprisingly familiar looking) Lanam label. It is always difficult to see something you have lived with for so long disappear, or change. We wholeheartedly acknowledge that this change is rooted in progress and that our quality, value, and house style will never disappear. Still donning our signature old gold and claret coloring, The Lanam Shop is still home to the finest knitwear available and now, much more. We always look forward to sharing more pieces from our ever-expanding collections for men and women, the home and table, toiletries and grooming products, and of course limited quantity color options for our classic sweater range.
